Legislators' earnings files, 1963-1982.

"The Comptroller's Office is responsible for maintaining all books, records and accounts of the State Treasury which relate to the finances of the State government" (AAC, 355-1-1). Prior to 1983, state legislators earnings were handled differently than other state employees in that taxes were not withheld from their checks and they were responsible for determining their own tax liabilities much like self-employed people. Now, information on legislators' pay is on the W-2 Listing (S-9-19) like all other employees. These files contain printouts of legislative payrolls for each session, lists of committee expenses reimbursed (with warrant numbers), and copies of tax letters listing annual income to legislators.
